# Independent transmission shop, dealer or chain?

An independent transmission shop is a locally owned business that repairs many makes, a dealer service department works on the brands it sells, and a chain is one of a network of shops under a national name. The right choice depends on your vehicle, your warranty and what you value, so the best step is to ask each the same questions.

All three can do good work. They differ in how they are organized, who decides the policies and how closely they specialize. This guide lays out the general differences and then the questions that work with any of them.

## At a glance

- Independent: locally owned, usually many makes
- Dealer: factory-trained for its brand and does recall repairs
- Chain: network with common branding and policies
- Federal law lets you service your vehicle at the shop of your choice

## What is an independent shop?

It is a business that is not tied to a vehicle maker or a national franchise. It decides its own policies, buys parts from suppliers it chooses and often specializes. A-1 Transmission is one: an independent shop at 670 East Grove Street in Reno, in business since 1968, working on cars, trucks, SUVs, RVs and 4x4s, foreign and domestic. Its motto is Quality Service. Honest Mechanics. Walk-ins are welcome during business hours, though an appointment is suggested.

## What does a dealer service department offer?

A dealer works on the brand it sells, with factory tools, training and access to the maker's service information. Recall repairs are done at authorized dealerships without cost to the owner, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If your vehicle is under factory warranty, a dealer is a natural first stop for a covered repair.

## What is a chain?

A chain or franchise shares a name, branding and often some policies across many locations. Some chains specialize in transmissions. Many publish their own offers on their websites, such as coverage terms or appointment tools, and those change over time, so read the current terms from the source instead of relying on a summary. Policies can differ between locations, so ask the specific shop.

## Does using an independent shop affect my warranty?

The Federal Trade Commission says it is illegal for a manufacturer or dealer to deny warranty coverage simply because someone other than the dealer did the work. They can deny a claim if they show that the work caused the damage. The FTC advises keeping records and receipts, whoever performs the service, and following the maker's schedule in your manual.

## What should I ask any of them?

- Do you work on my make and model, and on this kind of transmission?
- Will you diagnose before recommending anything, and what does that involve?
- Can I get a written estimate with parts and labor?
- What coverage comes with the work? See the [warranty questions guide](https://a1transmissionrenonv.com/guides/transmission-warranty-questions/)
- Will you call me before going over the estimate?
- Can I see or keep the replaced parts?

## How do I compare the answers?

Line them up side by side, as the [cost factors guide](https://a1transmissionrenonv.com/guides/transmission-repair-cost-factors/) suggests, and check reviews from real customers. You can read A-1's on the [reviews page](https://a1transmissionrenonv.com/reviews/) and learn more on the [about page](https://a1transmissionrenonv.com/about/). To ask about your own vehicle, call (775) 829-1333.

Answers

## Questions drivers ask

Still have a question? Call [(775) 829-1333](tel:+17758291333) during shop hours. More answers are on the [questions page](https://a1transmissionrenonv.com/faq/).

### Is a dealer better for a transmission problem?

Not always. Under factory warranty a dealer is the natural first step; outside it, many drivers choose a transmission specialist.

### Is a chain cheaper?

Policies and prices vary by location. Compare written estimates.

### Will an independent shop void my warranty?

Not for that reason alone, per the FTC. Keep your records.

### Can I just walk in?

Walk-ins are welcome during business hours, Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm.
