Ask about warranty coverage when you call, too. Every time you press and release the pedal, a friction disc is squeezed against the engine's flywheel. That small act, repeated hundreds of thousands of times, is why clutches wear out. The shop lists clutches among its services alongside automatic and standard transmissions and transfer cases. ## The parts that make up a clutch A typical manual clutch is a set. The clutch disc has friction material on both faces and rides on the gearbox input shaft. The pressure plate clamps the disc against the flywheel with a spring. A release bearing pushes on the pressure plate's fingers when you press the pedal. The pedal reaches the bearing through either a cable or a hydraulic line with a master and slave cylinder. Any of these can be the weak point, which is why the repair is more than a disc. Difficulty selecting gears is covered under [won't go into gear](https://a1transmissionrenonv.com/symptoms/wont-go-into-gear/). - The engine revs but the vehicle does not speed up in step, especially in higher gears or uphill - The pedal engages very high, very low or feels soft or spongy - The clutch grabs suddenly or shudders when pulling away - A smell like burning paper after a hard start - Trouble getting into gear with the engine running ## Why clutches wear faster for some drivers Towing, hauling, steep grades, stop-and-go traffic and riding the pedal all add heat and wear. Northern Nevada has plenty of each: trailers behind pickups, climbs toward Lake Tahoe and the Sierra passes, and 4x4s that see low-range driving. A clutch that has worked hard is not a sign you did anything wrong; it is wear doing its job. ## What the shop does first The shop follows its stated approach: "We will diagnose the situation to determine the kind of service you need." Slipping under load, a pedal that feels different and a burning smell usually point at the clutch. Grinding in specific gears often points at the gearbox. A road test sorts it out. ### Is a clutch replaced at the same time as other parts? Often the disc, pressure plate and release bearing are replaced together because the gearbox has to come out to reach them.
