Many problems that feel like a dead transmission turn out to be a leak, a sensor or a low fluid level, which is why the work starts with a diagnosis. ## What a rebuild involves An automatic transmission is a set of planetary gears, clutch packs, bands, seals and a hydraulic valve body, with a torque converter between it and the engine. Over time the friction material wears, seals harden and the fluid breaks down. In a rebuild the transmission comes out of the vehicle and is taken apart. The parts that wear in normal service, such as clutch plates, seals, gaskets and filters, are replaced, the hard parts are inspected, and anything damaged is replaced too. It is not the answer for a loose cooler line, a bad speed sensor or a fluid level problem, and a good shop says so.
