Jeeps combine an automatic or manual transmission with a transfer case, and many are driven off pavement. This page explains how to read the Jeep rows, what owner manuals say about fluid and drivetrain care in general terms, and what the shop can tell you about your Jeep.

## At a glance

- Four models in the table: Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee and Compass
- Wrangler: 1,292 power train complaints out of 7,940 (16%)
- Cherokee: 5,193 out of 10,085 (51%)
- Transfer cases are one of the shop's listed services

## Reading the Jeep rows

The Wrangler has 1,292 power train complaints out of 7,940 for model years 2012 to 2022, a share of 16%, and its busiest year is 2012 with 282. The Grand Cherokee shows 1,448 of 9,287 (16%), with 475 in 2014. The Compass shows 429 of 2,929 (15%). The Cherokee, a separate model from the Grand Cherokee, shows 5,193 of 10,085, a share of 51%, with 1,471 in 2014, the first year of that generation.

A high share means owners who wrote about that model mentioned the power train often. It does not say how many vehicles were affected, what the cause was or how many were repaired. The Cherokee row is an example of why a count should not be read alone: 1,471 reports in 2014, the first year of a generation, and the table cannot say why. Owners should look up their VIN on NHTSA for recalls and service bulletins that apply.

## The transfer case matters in a Jeep

Most Jeeps send power to all four wheels, and on a Wrangler the driver selects four-wheel drive and low range. A transfer case has its own fluid. Noise only in 4WD, a shift that will not engage or a light that flashes should be described when you call. The [4WD noise or not engaging page](https://a1transmissionrenonv.com/symptoms/4wd-noise-or-not-engaging/) says what those signs usually mean, and the [transfer case repair page](https://a1transmissionrenonv.com/services/transfer-case-repair/) says what the shop does first.

Give the year, model and engine, and say whether the problem shows in 2WD, 4WD or both.

## Fluid and the owner's manual

Jeep owner manuals list the transmission fluid, the transfer case fluid and service intervals, and many list severe-service intervals for off-road use, towing and dusty conditions. Northern Nevada Jeeps see dust, snow and steep trails, so the severe-service line often applies. Water crossings and mud are covered in the same manuals, which say what to inspect afterward.

## Winter and trails near Reno

Reno's normal December low is 25.7 F, with 5.2 inches of snow in each winter month from December to February (NOAA 1991 to 2020). Cold fluid is thick, and shifts feel slow until it warms; see [cold mornings and slow shifts](https://a1transmissionrenonv.com/guides/cold-mornings-and-shifting/). Check the vehicle for leaks after trail days, since rocks can damage pans and lines.

## What owners reported to NHTSA

**Owner complaints filed with NHTSA that name a POWER TRAIN component, model years 2012 to 2022**

| Make and model | All complaints, 2012 to 2022 | Powertrain complaints | Powertrain share | Model year with the most powertrain complaints |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Jeep Cherokee | 10,085 | 5,193 | 51% | 2014 (1,471) |
| Jeep Grand Cherokee | 9,287 | 1,448 | 16% | 2014 (475) |
| Jeep Wrangler | 7,940 | 1,292 | 16% | 2012 (282) |
| Jeep Compass | 2,929 | 429 | 15% | 2018 (151) |

Owner reports to NHTSA, not verified defect findings. Popular models draw more complaints because more of them are on the road.

On a phone the table shows the key columns. Turn the phone sideways or use a computer to see every column.

Answers

## Jeep transmissions and transfer cases questions

Still have a question? Call [(775) 829-1333](tel:+17758291333) during shop hours. More answers are on the [questions page](https://a1transmissionrenonv.com/faq/).

### Does A-1 Transmission work on Jeeps?

Yes. 4x4s and transfer cases are on the shop's list, and Jeeps are 4x4s. Call with the year, model and engine.

### Why is the Cherokee share so high?

A single generation drew many reports in a few model years. The table cannot tell how many vehicles were affected or why.

### Does a Jeep transfer case need fluid service?

Most have their own fluid and interval in the owner's manual. Ask the shop when you call.

### Can I drive a Jeep that will not go into 4WD?

Usually in two-wheel drive, but call first, especially in snow.
