U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2024 5-year estimates (tables B08201, B25046, B08301), read October 18, 2026. Small places carry large margins of error.

Genoa, often called Nevada's first permanent settlement, sits at the foot of the Sierra on the west side of Carson Valley. From town the short road out leads to US 395 near Minden, where the route turns north through Carson City and onto I-580 for the climb over Washoe Valley and the drop into south Reno.

From the foothills to the freeway

Genoa Lane, the town's main road, runs east into the valley through horse pastures, a golf course and a few signals. Then it meets US 395. The rest of the trip is the same road Gardnerville and Minden drivers take: 42.5 miles and 58 minutes in free-flow conditions (OSRM estimate).

Slow farm traffic and the occasional horse trailer set the pace on the local road. The highway itself is a four-lane road with a few signals in Minden and Gardnerville, and then the Carson City freeway.

A small place with a wide margin

Genoa has about 1,284 residents in 544 households (ACS 2024 5-year). The numbers are small, so this page quotes the headcount and the drive and leaves the rest of the profile alone.

Foothill weather

The Carson Range stops weather, so Genoa can see snow or wind when the valley floor is dry. Reno's normals show a January average of 5.2 inches of snow and a December average low of 25.7 F (NOAA 1991 to 2020). On a frozen morning give the vehicle time to warm before you judge it, and read the page on cold mornings and slow shifts if it is slow to engage.

Phone first from Genoa if

  • The vehicle hesitates before it moves
  • It hunts between gears on the foothill road
  • You notice a burning smell after a hot afternoon
  • It leaks a red fluid onto the driveway

If the transmission will not hold a gear, plan a tow through your roadside plan or a towing company rather than the drive, and call the shop first.

Can I drive it to the shop from Genoa?

30 to 70 minutes: 58 min from Genoa

Call before you set out. A slipping or overheating transmission can get worse on a long climb or a highway run, so describe what it is doing first.

Genoa sits against the Carson Range, so the first leg is a short local road before the highway; a transmission that struggles there will struggle more on the Washoe grade.
