SUV transmission repair
A-1 Transmission repairs SUV transmissions and transfer cases, automatic and standard, foreign and domestic, at its Reno shop. SUVs sit between cars and trucks: heavier than a sedan, and often fitted with all-wheel or four-wheel drive.

A-1 Transmission repairs your "car, truck or SUV", in the shop's own words. This page covers what makes an SUV transmission different and what to know before you call.

Why SUVs are not just tall cars
A full-size SUV can weigh as much as a pickup and is often rated to tow a boat or camper. Compact and mid-size SUVs are lighter but are usually built on car platforms with all-wheel drive. Either way the transmission carries more weight, more passengers and more cargo than the one in a small sedan, and in northern Nevada it does so on mountain grades and in a wide temperature range.
Heat is the main enemy of automatic transmission fluid, and an SUV loaded for a ski weekend or hauling a trailer to Lake Tahoe raises fluid temperature quickly. The towing and heat guide explains how to keep an eye on it.
Four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive
Many SUVs send power to all four wheels. A part-time four-wheel-drive system uses a transfer case with its own fluid, while an all-wheel-drive system may use a center coupling or a power transfer unit. A clunk, a grinding noise, a 4WD light that flashes or a drivetrain that binds on dry pavement can come from this part of the vehicle as well as from the transmission. The 4WD vs AWD guide lays out the difference, and the shop lists transfer cases among its services; see transfer case repair.
What owners of SUVs report
Fluid on the ground is one of the most common reasons an SUV owner calls any transmission shop, and it has several possible sources: a pan gasket, a cooler line, a seal or a vent. A small leak found early is easier to deal with than a transmission run low on fluid.
Check the fluid level only the way your owner's manual describes. Some SUVs have no dipstick at all, and checking those takes the right procedure and tools. The fluid check guide covers the usual cases.

Households with more than one vehicle
Across the service area, many households keep several vehicles. In Lyon County 35.2% of households have three or more, and in Douglas County 34.6%, against 21.9% nationally (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2024 5-year). An SUV is often one of them, used for family trips, snow days and errands, which means it can be driven daily or sit for weeks. Both patterns affect fluid and seals.

SUVs questions
Still have a question? Call (775) 829-1333 during shop hours. More answers are on the questions page.
Do you work on SUVs with all-wheel drive?
The shop works on SUVs, foreign and domestic, and lists transfer cases among its services. Call with the year, make, model and engine and the shop will tell you about your SUV.
My SUV is leaking red fluid. What should I do?
Red or brown fluid under a vehicle can come from the transmission, but other systems leak too. Call the shop, describe where the fluid is and how much, and ask whether to drive it in.
Is it worth repairing an older SUV?
That depends on the SUV and what is wrong with it. Call and describe it; the shop diagnoses first and then explains what it needs.
Should I change fluid more often if I tow with my SUV?
Many owner's manuals list a shorter interval for severe service such as towing. Check yours, or ask the shop when you call.
