Transmission rebuilds and overhauls

Yes. A-1 Transmission rebuilds and overhauls automatic and standard transmissions in Reno, for cars, trucks, RVs and 4x4s. A rebuild takes the transmission out, takes it apart, and replaces the worn and failed parts before it goes back in. The shop diagnoses first, so you only rebuild when the transmission actually needs it.

A-1 Transmission has rebuilt transmissions in Reno since 1968. The shop's own photos show racks of rebuilt units and rebuild kits laid out on the bench, and its promise is plain: "We will never try to sell you a service you don't need." Many problems that feel like a dead transmission turn out to be a leak, a sensor or a low fluid level, which is why the work starts with a diagnosis.

What a rebuild involves

An automatic transmission is a set of planetary gears, clutch packs, bands, seals and a hydraulic valve body, with a torque converter between it and the engine. Over time the friction material wears, seals harden and the fluid breaks down. In a rebuild the transmission comes out of the vehicle and is taken apart. The parts that wear in normal service, such as clutch plates, seals, gaskets and filters, are replaced, the hard parts are inspected, and anything damaged is replaced too. Then it is reassembled, filled and tested.

  • Removal and complete teardown
  • New friction plates, steels, seals and gaskets as needed (a rebuild kit)
  • Inspection of gears, drums, the pump and the valve body
  • Reassembly, fill with the correct fluid, and a road test

When a rebuild is the right call

A rebuild makes sense when the problem is inside the transmission: worn clutches that let it slip, burned friction material, internal damage after overheating, or several failed parts at once. It is not the answer for a loose cooler line, a bad speed sensor or a fluid level problem, and a good shop says so. Reviews of A-1 mention exactly that: drivers who expected a big repair and were told the problem was minor.

Standard transmissions, transfer cases and 4x4s

Overhauls are not only for automatics. The shop works on standard (manual) transmissions, clutches and transfer cases, on cars, trucks, SUVs, RVs and 4x4s, foreign and domestic. A manual gearbox overhaul replaces worn synchronizers, bearings and seals; the clutch is often checked at the same time.

How long it takes and what it costs

Both depend on the vehicle, what the teardown finds and parts availability, so the shop tells you once it has looked. Ask about warranty coverage when you call. The rebuild or replace guide and what affects the cost explain the trade-offs in general terms.

Transmission rebuilds and overhauls questions

Still have a question? Call (775) 829-1333 during shop hours. More answers are on the questions page.

Do I need a rebuild if my transmission is slipping?

Not always. Slipping can come from low or worn-out fluid, a leak or an electrical fault as well as from worn clutches. The shop diagnoses first and tells you which it is.

Can you rebuild the transmission in my truck or RV?

The shop works on cars, trucks, SUVs, RVs and 4x4s, foreign and domestic. Call with the year, make, model and engine and the shop will tell you.

Is there a warranty on a rebuild?

Ask about warranty coverage when you call; the shop will tell you what applies to your vehicle and repair.
