Transmission repair for Verdi drivers
A-1 Transmission is about 14 miles and 20 minutes from Verdi without traffic, east on I-80 through the Truckee River canyon and then south on I-580 and US 395. If the vehicle still shifts, driving it in during shop hours is reasonable; call first if it slips, overheats or was struggling on the grade.

Verdi is the last Nevada town before the California line on I-80, so the trip to the shop begins with a mild descent east along the Truckee River into the valley. The routing estimate uses Verdi Road (SR 425), Old US 40, then I-80 east, I-580 and US 395 south.
East from the state line
Old US 40 is the former highway that ran beside the river before I-80 existed, and it still links Verdi to Mogul and the west edge of Reno. The faster option is I-80 east, which passes the Boomtown area and enters Reno on the north side of the Truckee. The 14.1 miles take about 20 minutes (OSRM free-flow), and the Spaghetti Bowl is the only likely slowdown.
Winter on the Sierra side
Verdi gets weather before the rest of the valley. Storms that stack up against the Sierra bring snow to I-80 here sooner and in greater amounts, and chain requirements over Donner Summit can back traffic up toward the state line. Reno's own January snow average of 5.2 inches (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals) understates what Verdi sees. Check nvroads.com and Caltrans before you head in.
A transmission that shifts late in the cold gets slower still when the vehicle is working through snow. Give it a minute to warm and drive gently.
What Verdi households drive
Verdi has about 1,012 residents in 527 households and a median age of 49.7 (ACS 2024 5-year). Households average 2.56 vehicles, and 51.8% own three or more, a sign of trucks, trailers and weekend vehicles parked at home. In summer the Reno July average high of 93.9 F puts a premium on transmission cooling.
When to phone before you leave Verdi
- The transmission slips climbing back toward the state line
- A temperature warning appeared while towing
- It will not hold a lower gear on the descent
- The vehicle shifts hard when the weather turns cold
Any of these is worth a call before you drive. Read hard, harsh or late shifting and transmission overheating for the usual causes.

Can I drive it to the shop from Verdi?
Under 30 minutes: 20 min from Verdi
If it still moves and shifts, you can usually drive it in during shop hours. Call first so the shop knows it is coming.
Verdi sits at the foot of the Sierra, so the first miles on I-80 are a steady descent; a transmission that cannot hold a lower gear or smells hot should be looked at before the next climb back up.

Still have a question? Call (775) 829-1333 during shop hours. More answers are on the questions page.
How far is Verdi from A-1 Transmission?
About 14 miles, 20 minutes, mostly on I-80 east (OSRM free-flow estimate).
Is I-80 near Verdi hard on a transmission?
The descent toward Reno is gentle, but the climb back toward the state line is steady. A weak transmission usually shows it on the way up.
Does Verdi get snow when Reno does not?
Often yes, because it sits at the foot of the Sierra. Look at nvroads.com for current conditions before you leave.
