U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2024 5-year estimates (tables B08201, B25046, B08301), read October 18, 2026. Small places carry large margins of error.

Topaz Lake straddles the Nevada and California line on US 395. From the lake the route to the shop is the single highway north: through Holbrook Junction, past Gardnerville and Minden, across Carson City on the freeway, and over the Washoe Valley grade on I-580 into south Reno.

One highway, 67 miles

US 395 north of Topaz is a divided highway for much of the way. The 67.2 miles take about 90 minutes in free-flow conditions (OSRM estimate), and there are several lights in the Carson Valley towns. It is a straightforward drive with no turns, but also the kind of trip where a transmission that heats up has long distances between obvious places to stop.

The Topaz numbers

The Census place has about 318 residents in 104 households (ACS 2024 5-year). With a count this small, the margin is wide, so this page quotes the headcount and the drive and nothing finer.

Lake weather and the Sierra's edge

Topaz sits near 5,000 feet at the edge of the Sierra, with winter storms that can close the highway south of the lake and strong afternoon winds off the water. Reno's own normals of 5.2 inches of snow in January and a 93.9 F July high (NOAA 1991 to 2020) understate what the lake sees at the extremes. Nevada DOT and Caltrans post conditions. A cold start with a worn transmission means slow engagement; give it a minute.

Calls worth making from the lake

  • The vehicle stalls out of gear when you pull a boat out of the lake
  • You tow a trailer and the shifts get harder as you go
  • It will not move after you select Drive
  • A burning smell shows up on the climb out of the lake

If the vehicle will not move or stay in gear, plan a tow with a roadside plan or a towing company and call the shop first. See getting a car that will not move to the shop.

Can I drive it to the shop from Topaz?

More than 70 minutes: 1 h 30 min from Topaz

Call first. If it is slipping, overheating or will not stay in gear, plan a tow rather than a long drive; the shop can tell you what to watch for.

Topaz is the farthest point on US 395 the shop serves in Douglas County, and an hour and a half is too long to trust a transmission that is already complaining.
