Most Reno routes end the same way: get to the I-580 and US 395 corridor, come off in the south-central part of the city and finish on city streets to East Grove Street. From the north valleys you come down US 395, from Sparks you take I-80 west to the Spaghetti Bowl, and from the west side you run Moana Lane or McCarran Boulevard over to the freeway.

Bridge over the Truckee River, Reno

Getting across Reno to East Grove Street

Reno is a long, narrow city laid along the Truckee River, and three roads do most of the work. I-80 runs east and west through downtown and Sparks. US 395 and I-580 run north and south, and they share the same freeway through the middle of town. McCarran Boulevard (SR 659) loops the city and is the easy way to avoid the center when you are coming from the far north or far south.

From a downtown or midtown address, Virginia Street and Kietzke Lane are the straight surface routes south. From the north side, the freeway is quicker than the surface streets once the morning commute ends. If you are towing a trailer or driving an RV, the freeway and McCarran are kinder than the downtown blocks with signals every few hundred feet.

What stop-and-go does to a weak transmission

City driving is where many shift problems show up first. A transmission that engages late after sitting overnight, that flares between second and third at a light, or that shudders at 40 miles an hour on Virginia Street is telling you something the freeway may hide.

If you can, note what you felt and where: cold or warm, braking or accelerating, uphill or flat. That one detail helps the mechanic picture the problem before the vehicle is on the lift. The page on what to tell the shop when you call lists the details that help most.

Reno winter and summer, street by street

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Reno-Tahoe International Airport put the average January high at 47.7 F and the average December low at 25.7 F, with about 5.2 inches of snow in January. A frosty morning means thick fluid and slow engagement, so give the vehicle a minute before judging it. In July the average high is 93.9 F, and the heat is when a tired transmission slips under load or runs hot in traffic on a long Interstate climb.

See cold mornings and slow shifts and towing, heat and your transmission for what each season usually means.

Reno by the numbers

Reno has about 273,212 residents in 114,322 households. Households average 1.76 vehicles, 20.1% have three or more, and 8.4% have none (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2024 5-year). About 67.1% of workers drive alone to work, which means a lot of daily stop-and-go miles on the same few roads.

When to call before you drive over

  • The vehicle will not go into Drive or Reverse, or drops out of gear at a light
  • The engine revs but the vehicle barely accelerates
  • A temperature warning or burning smell appears in city traffic
  • Red or brown fluid is on the pavement where it sat overnight

For any of these, call (775) 829-1333 before you move the vehicle. If it will not move at all, arrange a tow with your roadside plan or a towing company and call the shop first. The guide on getting a car that will not move to the shop walks through it.
