Transmission repair for Stateline drivers
A-1 Transmission is about 55 miles and 76 minutes from Stateline without traffic, east over Spooner Summit on US 50 to Carson City and then north on I-580 and US 395. Call before you set out, and plan a tow if the transmission slips, overheats or will not hold gear; the mountain road is no place to find out.

Stateline sits on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe's south shore. To reach the shop, take US 50 east out of the basin, climb to Spooner Summit, descend to Carson City, and then follow I-580 and US 395 north across Washoe Valley into Reno.
Up to Spooner Summit and down the other side
The climb out of the Tahoe basin loads the engine and the transmission together, and the descent into Carson City uses lower gears and the brakes. The summit is about 7,146 feet, and the estimate for the whole trip is 55.1 miles and 76 minutes (OSRM free-flow). Add time for snow, for event traffic and for slow trucks on the grade.
Stateline in the Census count
The Census place shows about 503 residents in 249 households, with a median age of 35.0 (ACS 2024 5-year). With so few residents and a large visitor population, the figures understate the vehicles on US 50 on any weekend, and the margin of error is wide. This page quotes the headcount and the drive only.
Mountain weather you can plan around
The Tahoe basin gets more snow than Reno, whose own January normal is about 5.2 inches (NOAA 1991 to 2020), and chain controls on US 50 are common in winter storms. Nevada DOT posts the current status at nvroads.com. A visitor with a rental or a tired transmission should not start the drive in a storm. Cold air also makes fluid thicker, so give the vehicle a few minutes to warm before the climb.
Ask first from Stateline if
- The transmission warning light came on after the last climb
- It shifts late or slips on the grade
- It smells hot or burnt after a long uphill
- It is stuck in a single gear
These are good reasons to phone before you drive. See transmission overheating and driving with a slipping transmission. If the vehicle cannot hold gear, arrange a tow with your roadside plan or a towing company and call the shop first.

Can I drive it to the shop from Stateline?
More than 70 minutes: 1 h 16 min from Stateline
Call first. If it is slipping, overheating or will not stay in gear, plan a tow rather than a long drive; the shop can tell you what to watch for.
US 50 climbs to Spooner Summit at about 7,146 feet and then drops steeply toward Carson City, so a transmission that cannot hold a lower gear is better towed than driven.
