Pickup truck transmissions

A-1 Transmission works on pickup truck transmissions, clutches and transfer cases, automatic and standard, foreign and domestic. Trucks that tow and haul in northern Nevada heat work their transmissions hardest.

The shop works on trucks, foreign and domestic, older and newer, half-ton and three-quarter-ton. An October 2021 Google review mentions a Ram 2500 that came in for a full rebuild: "Got my 2500 ram in out in 4 days." That is a customer's account, not a promise about any repair.

Why truck transmissions wear differently

A truck transmission spends its life under load. Towing a trailer, hauling a bed full of material or climbing the grades around Reno all raise fluid temperature, and heat is what breaks down fluid and wears clutch material. Many trucks have a tow/haul mode and a transmission temperature reading for this reason; using them helps.

4x4 trucks add a transfer case, which has its own fluid and its own wear points. A clunk, a grind or a 4WD light that flashes is a transfer case question as much as a transmission one.

Trucks in the service area

Households across the service area own a lot of vehicles. In Lyon County, 35.2% of households have three or more vehicles, and in Douglas County 34.6%, against 21.9% nationally (U.S. Census Bureau ACS 2024). Routes between the towns run on I-80, US 50 and US 395, and the grades into Reno and Carson City put a loaded truck's transmission to work.

Signs a truck transmission needs a look

  • Slipping or flaring RPM when pulling a load
  • Late or harsh shifts, especially when hot
  • A transmission temperature warning while towing
  • Red or brown fluid under the truck
  • 4WD that will not engage, or a grinding noise in 4WD

Each has its own page under symptoms. If the truck is slipping or overheating, call before you drive it far, and unhook the trailer if you can.

Manual trucks and clutches

Older and work trucks often have a standard transmission. The shop works on standard transmissions and clutches as well as automatics; see clutch repair. A clutch that slips under load, shudders as the truck pulls away or only grabs near the top of the pedal is worth a call, and a trailer or a full bed makes a worn clutch show itself sooner.
